Chocolate Drive - Pros, Cons and Alternatives

AMA All.
The decision is whether to go ahead with a Chocolate Drive.

If yes, when. If no, what are the alternatives for raising money.

Please be succinct in your responses and please do not harshly criticise any opposing views expressed by CPAC Members or Parents.

I'm all for healthy fundraisers. BUT we have already discussed this issue in our second meeting, held on 2 April. The committee voted to hold a chocolate drive for the whole school in June. The following meeting, we decided to postpone the drive until later in the year (ie now.) Frankly, I don't mind if we have one or not BUT we should start making decisions that we intend to follow through with otherwise we risk going around in circles and wasting time revisiting past issues.

Being a strong proponent of efficiency in decision-making, it is hard to argue against a group decision already made. My request is that sensitive matters affecting the health and wellbeing of children, be given extra attention. Since this decision was made, there were many parents who heard about the chocolate drive and when Sr Leila posted the issue on the blog, it (the chocolate drive) was met with strong and vocal opposition. I am personally opposed to a chocolate drive at our College. There are many more creative and healthy means in raising money and let's not fool ourselves, if we did a choc drive, our children will end up indulging in the chocolate, and so will we. Also, the timing is wrong for another fund raiser. We should delay any new fund raising until after the Annual Spring Fete. My suggestion for alternative fund raisers: High School Sportathon, fresh fruit salads, healthy meals from businesses such as Sanitarium, etc. It would not be difficult at all to come up with some healthy choices for fundraising. We should leave the chocolate drives behind and look to the future. We need to establish our College as one that walks-the-talk.

Well said Br Anwar. I agree. We can't on the one hand say that we support healthy eating and then get our kids to promote the sale of chocolates. And in most cases that would mean stocking up our households with months supply of chocolates (like I did last yr in support of the school) because I did not want my daughter selling it to strangers cause of the danger factor. And I did not want her to sell it to people I know, because of the embarrassment that the school she is at, is way behind with regards to healthy choices. In every muslim community, Islamic schools are always seens as 'behind' and hence many muslims send their kids to Aussie/ State schools. I therefore prefer to hide the fact that my kid is in a chocolate drive so that there is not yet another aspect i feel I need to defend the school on! So I buy all the chocolates she gets sent home with. This yr though, I feel the school is more informed as to what parents want due to this sucessful BLOG. And QLD education as since published guildines of "healthy choices" including fundraising.

Is father's day not coming up. How about selling father's day cards or something for the Dads.
